5 reasons (excuses) keeping you from working out

By: 0

This is the time of year when we start to take stock of our lives as New Year’s Resolutions loom right around the corner. Are we where we want to be, are there changes that can be made, where can we improve?

Here are 5 of the most common reasons (I’m being nice… they are actually just excuses!) that keep us from reaching our health & fitness goals throughout the year:

  1. “I Just Don’t Have Time”
This is one of my favorites. In the amount of time spent talking about how you don’t have time to work out… you could have worked out! Whether you have 30lbs to lose or just want to be in better shape, you can get closer to your goal in a quick 5-10 minutes a day! When saying you don’t have time, what you’re really is saying is you won’t MAKE time.
  2. “I Don’t Have Anyone to Watch My Kids”
This, while extremely valid, is sadly just another excuse. Ask your friends or fellow moms/dads if they work out and if so, how they manage it? Where there is a will, there is a way! Single parent, working full time and can’t afford childcare? I get it, but you can always do something at home and by including your kids you make it that much more fun. Not to mention the great example you’re setting for them! So do some burpees or go for a jog or bike ride around the block, but make it a family affair!
  3. “It’s Too Expensive”
Ok this one isn’t going to make me very popular, but it’s the hard truth… you CAN afford it by cutting out unnecessary spending and prioritizing your health. Unnecessary spending, like what? Well, first let’s have a look at that $6 a day Starbucks habit! $6 x 30 days in a month is $180… the average cost of membership at a CrossFit Gym. How about that really expensive car payment for the really fancy car that also requires pricey Premium fuel? Is owning that car improving your health, or just your status? When that car breaks down you can buy a new one. When your body breaks down it’s game over! Health isn’t expensive… sickness, disease, hospital visits and surgeries are expensive! Prioritize your health and you’ll be rich in more ways than just money in the bank.
  4. “I’m SO Out of Shape, I’d Have to Get in Shape Just to Join a Gym!”
Utter nonsense! Even if you’ve never worked out a day in your life, simply moving your body is doing more for your health than sitting on the couch lamenting how out of shape you are. Take the stairs, park farther from your destination, ride your bike, go for a hike or search out a fitness facility where you feel welcome and comfortable… whatever you choose, just MOVE!
  5. “I’m Just So Tired, I Don’t Have the Energy”
Again, a valid complaint. However, this is one of the easiest to combat. Regular exercise actually GIVES you more energy rather than sapping it. If you commit for a solid 2-3 weeks, you will see the return on your time investment and you’ll be so glad you did. Before long, you’ll wonder how you were always so tired getting up at 7:30 when now you’re up and at the gym at 6am and have energy to spare all day!
